JM might have mishandled the trade but Calgary definitely mishandled Boumeester's development. I believe there was definitely something wrong on the Flames when Calgary screwed up both Bouwmeester and Phaneuf.

Could be, but in JayBo's case I think he is what he is. Not sure if anyone can change him, then or now. Phaneuf is likely another case entirely.

you're right on how jbo was handled. they misused his skillset.

But Phaneuf was great in Calgary so I don't see any issues there. He dropped in toronto not Calgary.

But if he stayed under BSutter Phaneuf may have actually flourished more then Jbo since Phaneufs hard hitting style would have suited Sutters game plan more

I still think JayBo can be a good player. Being tough isn't the only criteria to being a good defenseman as Nick Lidstrom demonstrated over the course of a lengthy and decorated career. Not to say Bouwmeester is in that category of course.

A team needs to accept his strengths and weaknesses and put him in the spot to succeed. He is a great skating defenseman and is, to use an often overused cliche, a quality puck-mover. He'll never be a legitimate #1 guy along the lines of Pronger, Weber, etc., but can play big minutes and has to be better than he has been in Calgary. My guess is he needs to play somewhere that he is not the top guy, even if he is paid like it.

I agree that the Panthers chances of re-signing Bouwmeester were not good and they should have made the best value deal they could have at the deadline that year.

I also agree that the Panthers are in better hands with Dale Tallon pulling the strings though I hope he handles the cap better than he did while GM of the Hawks. That's where he got into trouble in Chicago.

Well said. If being in some cap trouble brings a Cup to Florida, I'm happy to deal with that.

Just picturing Bouwmeester on the Flyers. Perhaps one of the softest players I have EVER seen, and I've followed hockey since 1973. Probably the luckiest dude in the NHL. To think how he bad mouthed this area (damn good area for hockey considering the product at the time), well he got his wish, went to Canada, and just started cashing checks while skating in "circle 8's" there. The guy logs minutes, but, he's junk.

To any Panther fans that have followed the Panthers close enough to know, was Bouwmeester as soft in Florida as he is now? And why do people always talk about the fact that Bouwmeester can play big minutes? Anyone CAN play big minutes, but that doesn't mean they should. I wouldn't want a softie like JBo playing 25 minutes a game.

Did the COUNT sign off on the Luongo trade? I always thought that was Keenan's doing.

What a retarded comment. Maybe go through the stats and see what defenseman play more than 25 minutes a game. Not as many as you think which should tell you its not as easy as you think. That many minutes also tells you they are playing against the top lines in the league, something anyone just cant do. JBO is a fantastic skater, I'm a flames season ticket holder and I watch all year at home games. He plays his position solid & its not like he had an allstar playing as his partner. In fact he had Butler as his partner who went from a depth dman in Buffalo to top 4 minutes in Calgary. He's durable, that might mean something to some teams like Philly. We got devastated with injuries last year & he played over 30 minutes a game. I guess anyone can do that eh?

I dont defend Sutter, but 4 years ago he gave the guy a contract many other GM's would have done the same thing. Overpaid him, hell yah. Didnt have to give up too many assets to get him except for money for a 24 year allstar top 2 dman. No brainer. But at 6.68mill per year, that should command a player not only with his abilities but his leadership & JBO just doesnt have that pedigree. But he is a hell of a dman. For the right team, he's probably the cheapest top 2 dman to acquire on the market right now.

It was a glorious moment for me when Jay Blow was traded.

He had excellent skills, but i couldn't stand his lack of character, passion, and played like a wimp.

Calgary totally blew it by choosing Jay Blow over Phaneuf.

6 of one, half dozen of the other. They're both brutal. Phaneauf is a plug, cheap hits, won't drop the gloves. He fits in in Toronto.

Bravo and well spelled out Dan.

JBo was (I do not get to watch him very much in Calgary due to those late, East Coast time starts) awful to watch here when he played. "Soft" is the perfect label. To be sure, he is fast and agile, but at 6'4" 212 lbs. he routinely lost every battle in front of the net, behind the net, frankly anywhere, and routinely never sought to use that size. As a comparison Keaton Ellerby is 6'5" 217 lbs., and that guy (who is also an excellent skater reputed to be able to run a good power play strangley enough) he throws his shoulders and hips around with abandon.

As a Panther fan there was nothing at all to like about Bo. Remember Michael Peca at TSN talking about JBo?: "Peca, reflecting back upon his own playing days, suggested Bouwmeester was a casual player, relatively easy to play against, who turned pucks over and lacked a sense of urgency in his game."

He hated this market and was desperate to go home to Alberta (he reportedly has a no-movement clause). We finally got the last laugh though. Jay Bo- 0 career playoff games. If he'd stuck around this market he disliked so much he would have made the playoffs at least once (last season) and the press would never have given him the pounding he gets (fully deserving) now. Wow, a minus on every season since 06-07. Highly overrated player.
